Highly detailed map of Pensacola, one of the earliest printed maps to depict the original subdivision of the City by G.E. Chase, its surveyor. Includes a note stating that the lots bounded by heavy lines are already sold. The present map would appear to be the second of two maps created by G.E. Chase, the original surveyor for town of Pensacola. Chase's first map, Plan of the New City of Pensacola with part of the Old City and vicinity in West Florida by G.E. Chase, 1836, covers the southern half of the newly created townsite, extending only to Lafayette Street and omitting the Oak Grove Park (10 acres), therefore not showing over 100 city blocks north of Lafayette. This first Chase map survives in a single example in the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History. http://ufdc.ufl.edu… The present map, which shows the creation of a number of early squares, a hotel and notes that sale of a number of lots in the town, was likely Chase's second map, lithographed by Price & Graham in New York in 1836, in connection with the continuing efforts to promote and sell land in Pensacola. The growth of Pensacola began in earnest during the Andrew Jackson presidency, at a time when the government and private enterprise were fixated on how to create the infrastructure necessary to connect internal domestic resources with major transportation hubs. One of the most important of these projects was the plan to connect the deepwater harbor of Pensacola with the cotton-growing regions of southern Georgia and Alabama by means of a railroad to Columbus on the Chattahoochee River. At the same time as this prospective railroad development, there was a land boom in the Pensacola region of unprecedented scale, the largest such boom in Florida in the 19th Century. The present map corresponds with the commencement of construction of the railroad and the formation of the Pensacola Land Company, for the purpose of subdividing and developing the region. The summer of 1836 saw actual construction of the railroad started. All during the fall and winter the little town was abustle with the arrival of laborers, who had to be brought in from the North, and the unloading of rails, cars and even locomotives. For the first time since the purchase of Florida, ships from England came to Pensacola, bringing iron for the railroad, while brigs and barques and schooners from the eastern seaboard were frequently anchored in the spacious harbor. At the same time the Pensacola Land Company was laying out the Rivas and Shackleford tracts and a part of the public lands entered by Gregory, into the New City of Pensacola. The survey lines were run and a plat of the city drawn by George E. Chase, a brother of Captain Chase, one of the two primary developers of the town of Pensacola, along with Gregory. It is probably that this map was produced either immediately before or immediately after the first public auction of lands in Pensacola, which took place on January 3, 4 and 5 of 1837 and included buyers from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Charleston, New Orleans, Cuba and even agents for European buyers. Rarity The present example of Chase's map would appear to be the only surviving example. We note a possible reference to the map in the Library Company of Philadelphia's September 1899 Bulletin (Ub5, 301, M7). The map is not listed in OCLC or any reference work or auction or dealer catalog entry.
