Cartobibliographic notes:
This map is important because it was created during the Third Seminole War, the last of the Indian Wars to take place in Florida. Map making was particularly important during the Second and Third Seminole Wars because geographical knowledge of Florida, particularly the interior of Central and South Florida, was relatively sparse. Maps like this one helped to fill that knowledge cap, providing information to government officials, both military and civilian, to help them in the decision-making process. The donor explained that the map was displayed on the wall of his grandfather's office, and then subsequently in his father's office, at the family hardware and dry goods store in downtown Tampa. Knight & Wall was the preeminent store in Tampa during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
