Pub Note:
The map includes illustrations of people and places around Florida. While most of the illustrated people are depicted in acceptable stereotypical ways, the caraciture of African Americans is derogatory and offensive. This was a common way to depict African Americans during the Jim Crow era (1876 to the late 1960s).

Geographical Description:
Illustrated map of most of the United States, from the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts up through the Midwest and Northeast. Cartoon-like depictions of people and activities. Illustrations were intended to be humorous but the depictions of the few African Americans that are included are derogatory and stereotypical caricatures. The lone American Indian pictured, in the Florida Everglades, is culturally inaccurate and stereotypically attired as being from the Great Plains.
The derogatory way that African Americans are depicted coincides with the Jim Crow era (1876 to the late 1960s) that impacted the lives of African Americans throughout the United States but especially in the south. National companies, such as Greyhound, adhered to the laws and customs of Jim Crow, even forcing African American passengers move to the back of the bus when entering states that required segregation by race.
