Hydrographic/topographic map entitled "Okinawa Jima" (more completely: "Japan [/] Nansei Shoto [/] Okinawa Jima [/] (Southern Part) [/] From Japanese surveys to 1935 with additions from U. S. Navy surveys in 1945." It was published by the Defense Mapping Agency Hydrographic/Topographic Center of Washington, D.C. This is the 6th edition, dated November 28, 1981 and numbered 97465. The island of Okinawa is one of the largest in the Ryukyu Islands archipelago (also called Nansei Syoto or Nansei-Shoto), located between the Philippine and East China Seas. It takes up much of the right side of this map, with smaller islands on its left. Water depth is indicated with numbers placed throughout the map. There is a conversion table from fathoms to meters, a note about tidal currents, and a paragraph with the heading "Caution" regarding areas which "will no longer be maintained on this chart by Notice to Mariners." Additionally, there is a glossary of equivalent English and Japanese terms to the right of the title. Okinawa was a significant battle site between Japanese and American forces during World War II. The battle took place between April 1-June 22, 1945.
