Geographical Description:
Separately published map of the lands of the Lake Highlands Company, noting offices in Clermont, Florida and Huntington, West Virginia.

The map shows the region between Lake Minneola, Lake Minnehaha, Lake Apopka and John's Lake, with the primary development in the areas being Clermont and Clermont Heights.

Clermont was created in 1884 by the Clermont Improvement Company, which was formed by 4 New Jersey Investors. By 1890, Clermont had become the tomato capital of Florida. However, the Great Freeze of 1894-95 wiped out the tomato crop and most of the town residents moved away, with the town charter abandoned.

By 1913, Clermont had recovered. The first newspaper, the Clermont Clarion was opened in 1913 and Stuart Bownman of Huntington, West Virginia founded the Lake Highlands Company, with the idea of developing residential property north of Lake Minnehaha. By 1916, the town had been re-incorporated as the City of Clermont.
